The Emergency Medical Response Call Out Team is seeking a few new members willing to complete the initial Red Cross training and to participate and continue to train and drill as a Team member.  The deadline for signing up is February 1!

What is the EMR Team?  The EMR Team is a special emergency medical response team within MBCERTA and presently has 19 volunteer members including 4 EMT’s and 7 Red Cross CPR Instructors.

What is the mission of the EMR Team?  The overall mission is to achieve excellence in the provision of community service to the City of Manhattan Beach.

* Mission second, is to provide emergency preparedness and medical response instruction to residents, organizations and citizen groups in Manhattan Beach.

What are the requirements for Team membership?  1) Each person must be a member of MBCERTA.  This membership comes with completion of the four-day Disaster Preparedness and Response training class offered twice each year.  2) Each person must have a current CPR certificate from Red Cross or American Heart Association prior to the first class day. The EMR Team Instructors provide CPR training every other month. Participants will receive a BLS level CPR certification as a part of the EMR training class.  3) Be physically capable of performing all medical response skills.  4) Complete an acceptance interview with the Team Director.  5) Begin studying the 700+ page Red Cross text book in December 2017, no later than February 1, 2018. What does the training consist of?  The emergency medical training content is knowledge based and designed to be approximately 50% instructional and 50% hands-on skills training. There are quizzes at every class on prior material and both written tests and scenario-based competency testing during the class and at its conclusion for Red Cross certification. This is a challenging and rigorous course of training.

Who will be doing the instruction?  The Team Director will be the lead Red Cross EMR Instructor and will receive assistance from other EMR Instructors, EMR Team EMT’s, MBFD Paramedics and subject matter experts.

What does the training class cost?  There is no training fee cost to the participants. The text will be provided upon acceptance to the program. There is a $5 luncheon fee on the Saturdays and a requirement to purchase a stethoscope and pulse oximeter, as well as purchase of team uniform and boots.

When and where will the program take place?  All the training classes will be held in the MB Fire Department and Police HQ in the Community Room at 400 15th Street MB.

A very detailed description of exactly what will be done every class day will be provided in advance.  It is a Red Cross certification rule that no class day may be missed.

The MBCERTA EMR Team is looking for men and women who are willing to make a volunteer commitment to the EMR Team and the City of Manhattan Beach as a means of gaining knowledge and training in emergency medical response, care and treatment.  It is all about “knowing what to do.”  An old saying from paramedics is, “In an emergency you do not rise to the occasion, you sink to your level of training.”
